Description

This vibrant Northern Plains roach with spreader likely dating from the mid-20th century, is a striking example of traditional indigenous regalia. Crafted from porcupine guard hairs and dyed deer tail hair, it showcases the meticulous artistry characteristic of these pieces. The Roach features a dominant crest of rich dark brown guard hairs which stand erect and create a formidable silhouette. Interspersed and forming a dramatic accent are sections of brightly dyed deer tail hair creating a bold contrast and dynamic visual appeal. The hairs are secured to a central base and the roach is presented on its original metal spreader, which would have been used to maintain its shape and attach it to the wearer’s hair or cap. Such roaches were significant ceremonial and dance accessories symbolizing bravery and prestige. While exhibiting minor age appropriate wear to the hairs the roach remains in excellent condition, with its colors vibrant and its form well preserved. This is a powerful and authentic example of Northern Plains material culture. Dimensions: 31”x17”x12”. Stand not included in sale. See photos.
