October Fall Classic
Lot 1279:
Description
This is an impressive lost-wax cast bronze sculpture of a jockey riding a racehorse, capturing a moment of intense motion, likely a slowing gait or a brief pause after a gallop. The style strongly suggests an Equestrian Sporting Art piece, possibly a 20th-century interpretation of a 19th-century master like Isidore Bonheur or Degas’s horse studies, though the specific foundry and artist are not marked. The patina is a beautiful, naturally aged verdigris with hints of darker bronze showing through, indicative of outdoor exposure. The detail is notable, from the jockey’s cap and boots (complete with spurs) to the horse’s braided mane and tack. The entire piece is mounted on a stepped rectangular bronze base. Its condition is overall good, with a heavy, stable presentation; the deep verdigris finish shows surface dirt and minor scuffs consistent with age and outdoor display, particularly some wear and brighter copper color on the tail’s end and the base’s edges. H 35″, W 10″, D 45″. See photos.
