October Fall Classic
Lot 1270a:
Description
As an enthusiast of architectural salvage, finding a Victorian gate set like this is a real treat. This is a magnificent Gothic Revival cast iron entrance gate and its two flanking ornamental posts manufactured by the Buckeye Fence Company, a division of Mast, Foos & Co. of Springfield, Ohio. The presence of the crisp Buckeye-Springfield, OH casting mark confirms its origin and era, likely dating to the late 19th century (c. 1880-1900). The impressive posts feature pointed arches and decorative finials characteristic of the Gothic style, complementing the simple yet sturdy gate. The set is of cast iron construction and presents a highly desirable rustic, weathered patina—a mix of original white/off-white paint remnants, heavy surface rust, and natural oxidation that gives it fantastic character. All components are structurally sound, though surface wear, flaking paint, and heavy corrosion are visible, particularly on the hinges and latch. Posts measure: 49″ tall and 8″ wide x8″ deep. Gate measures 49″ tall, 37″ wide and 2″ deep. See photos.
