October Fall Classic
Lot 1212q:
Description
This is an incredible lot of vintage automotive hood ornaments and trim pieces, primarily from the 1940s and 1950s, a golden age of streamlined and jet-age styling. The collection includes a desirable Mack Bulldog mascot on its original mounting armature , a 1955 Cadillac “flying lady” crest (marked “55 CAD.”), a 1950 Chevrolet hawk, a 1938 Nash Lafayette, a 1947-49 Studebaker piece, and a separate 1940s Chevrolet flying lady. Most are made of chrome-plated pot metal or similar alloys, typical of the era. The style is classic, mid-century Detroit design with a heavy emphasis on speed and motion. As a collector, I’d grade the lot’s condition as Fair to Good. The chrome finish shows significant pitting, oxidation, scratching, and areas of finish loss across all pieces, consistent with being removed parts and barn finds. The Mack Bulldog on its rod shows heavy rust on the steel armature. The reverse side of the Cadillac crest has handwritten paint and visible mounting hardware. The largest piece, the Studebaker, is also separated into two components. Dimensions: Mack Bulldog: 3″ tall (minus armature), 1.75″ wide, 4″. 1938 Nash Lafayette: 8″ long, 2.75″ tall, 1″ wide. 1950 Chevrolet hawk: 17″ long, 4″ tall, 4″ wide. 1947-49 Studebaker: 22.75″ long, 3″ tall, 1.75″ wide. 1955 Cadillac flying lady: 15″ long. 5″ wide, 2″ tall. 1940’s Chevrolet flying lady: 14.5″ long, 3″ tall, 1.5″wide.
