October Fall Classic
Lot 1212n:
Description
This is a fantastic lot of vintage chrome hood ornaments and trim, from the 1940s to early 1950s, a golden age of automotive design where every manufacturer had a distinct, flowing mascot. The set includes several pieces that appear to be Mopar related, specifically from the Dodge, DeSoto, and Plymouth marques, as evidenced by the distinct styles: one piece resembles the iconic Dodge ‘Fratzog’ or airplane-style hood ornament (possibly from a 1948-1951 model, though heavily stylized), another features a distinctive DeSoto-style portrait in a clear or amber plastic insert, and two of the lower pieces feature the sail/ship design associated with Plymouth of the early 1940s. These pieces were often made of die-cast zinc/pot metal and then chrome-plated. The overall collection is in poor to fair condition, clearly salvaged. They exhibit significant pitting, corrosion, chrome loss, oxidation, and surface rust (particularly on the mounting hardware and the lower wire arms). The plastic/lucite inserts are present in most pieces but show fading, hazing, and cracking consistent with age and weather exposure. They are perfectly suited for restoration or display as automotive relics. Dimensions: 1948-51 Dodge: 16.25″ long, 3.5″ tall, 1.5″ wide. 1948 Dodge Fargo (Canadian) 16.5″ long, 3.75″ tall, 2.25″ wide. 1949 DeSoto: 23.75″ long, 5.5″ tall, 2″ wide. Pair of 1941 Plymouth mascots (one broken): 16′ long, 3″ tall, 1″ wide (minus armature). See photos.
