October Fall Classic
Lot 1212c:
Description
The lot presents a fine collection of vintage automotive hood ornaments, a must-have for any serious collector of classic Americana and automobilia. The group includes several iconic mascots, likely dating from the Streamline Moderne or Art Deco periods, and made primarily of chrome-plated pot metal or similar alloys. Featured pieces include a classic Mack Trucks Bulldog with a leash-like wire (a well-known symbol of durability), a striking 1931 Dodge Ram in a leaping posture, and several stylized bird or goose ornaments. The sleek goose with the S-curve brass mounting rod appears to be an aftermarket or early-era mascot, while one of the other birds is very similar to the 1933 Chevrolet Master Eagle/Bird ornament. This particular assortment embodies the golden age of automotive design where hood ornaments served as signature elements of speed and prestige. The condition of the pieces is consistent with age and use, showing moderate to heavy pitting, flaking, and corrosion of the chrome finish on all pieces. Some retaining hardware is present, but overall wear and patination is heavy, with rust visible on the posts and mounting screws. Mack Bulldog: 5″ tall, 2″ wide, 5″ deep. Ram: 4″ tall (minus post), 3″ wide, 7″ deep. 1933 Chevrolet Bird: 7′ tall, 3″ wide, 7″ deep. Goose: 7.5″ long, 6″ wide, 3″ tall (minus armature). See photos.
