October Fall Classic
Lot 1212d:
Description
The post-war American automotive industry was obsessed with speed and the jet-age, and these two mascots capture that aesthetic perfectly. The pair includes what appears to be an original 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air “Hood Bird” or “Jet Bird” ornament, characterized by its swept-back wings and fighter jet-like profile, likely die-cast and chrome-plated by General Motors (USA). Alongside it is a second, equally dramatic piece: a 1951-1952 Chrysler Imperial or New Yorker winged hood ornament, distinguishable by its streamlined, winged design that evokes flight and luxury. Both pieces are quintessential examples of mid-century Americana. Condition is well-loved and original, consistent with authentic salvaged car parts; both chrome mascots show heavy pitting, loss of chrome plating, and a cloudy, weathered finish across the surfaces. The mounting bracketry underneath the mascots displays significant surface rust and corrosion, and they are currently custom-mounted on rough-cut white stone bases with metal rods for display.
H 9.25″, W 9.25″, D 15″ (as a pair on bases)
