Description

This is a fantastic piece of Americana folk art—an apparent hand-painted sign likely dating to the mid-20th century. Signs like this were often used for roadside attractions, farms, or private businesses that wanted to stand out with a distinctive, vernacular style. The piece is crafted from a single, piece of Masonite, painted in a striking color palette: a black background for the STOP section, featuring a yellow octagonal shape with black lettering, transitioning to a bright yellow background for the black, hand-scripted text reading “UNCLE JOHN’S of Indiana.” The bold, non-standard text and the stark color contrast give it great visual appeal. The style is charmingly naive, a genuine piece of hometown advertising. The sign shows wear consistent with age and outdoor use: heavy scuffs, scratches, paint loss, and chipping throughout the painted surface and along the edges, lending it a desirable, aged patina. The reverse side shows a weathered, unpainted or faded surface. There are several visible nail/screw holes used for mounting. This is a great find for any collector of regional ephemera or folk art signage. H 8.25″, W 28.75″, D 0.25″
