October Fall Classic
Lot 1104:
Description
This is a fantastic piece of early 20th-century Americana, a hand-painted advertising sign for Pine Grove Farms selling “Butter – Eggs – Poultry” in Greenwich, Connecticut. Signs like this, often painted on simple wood or pressed fiberboard with a dark, rich ground, were the backbone of farm-to-market advertising before the advent of ubiquitous lithography. The charming mix of fonts—a bold white serif for the farm name and location, contrasted with a beautiful white and salmon-colored script for the product list—captures that classic folk art aesthetic. It was likely displayed on a farm stand or truck. The sign is constructed of a thin, curved piece of painted pressed fiberboard. The material shows significant edge wear, chipping, and some loss consistent with age and outdoor use. The painted surface has areas of fading, scuffs, and minor paint loss, particularly in the lower left corner and around the perimeter, but the colors remain relatively vibrant, and the text is completely legible. The back is a uniform brown color with surface scratches. This is a great, authentic piece of New England agricultural history. H 12.5″, W 34″, D 0.25″
