Description
Highly desirable “Search Light” Bicycle Lamp, manufactured by the Bridgeport Brass Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. This top-of-the-line kerosene oil lamp dates to the peak of the bicycle lamp era, circa 1897-1900, based on Louis Hornberger’s design patent. Constructed from nickel-plated brass, this model features exceptionally ornate, cast metalwork on the top (“SEARCH LIGHT”), the lens bezel, and the oil fount base. It retains its rare and important components, including the adjustable fork/fender clamp with its articulating arm, the front glass lens, and the striking red/green faceted side jewel reflector (two are visible in the photos). The oil burner apparatus is present inside the lamp’s cavity, which is a key completeness factor often missing. The lamp is in overall good, unpolished, antique condition. The original nickel plating shows a charming, aged finish with heavy patina, oxidation, and brass bleed-through, which collectors often prefer over polishing. There is minor surface wear consistent with over a century of age and use. The front lens appears intact, and the side jewels are securely mounted. The wick adjuster knob (on the right side) is present but there is no wick. H 5″, W 3.5″, D 7″ (including mount).
