Description

This is a fantastic example of a late 19th to early 20th Century bicycle oil lamp, style No. 26, produced by Edward Miller & Co. (E.M. & Co.) in the USA. These kerosene or oil-burning headlamps were essential equipment for early cyclists, and this specific model exhibits the ornate Nickel-plated brass construction typical of high-quality American lamps of the era. Key features include the ornate top with the manufacturer’s mark (“Miller Made in U.S.A. By E.M. & Co. 26”), the upper vented chimney for heat escape, a swing-out front glass bezel, and a green/red faceted “jewel” side reflector which served as a warning light for cross traffic. It retains its original adjustable fender or fork mounting clamp, which is a desirable completeness factor for collectors. The lamp is in overall good, unpolished antique condition; the nickel plating shows typical patina, oxidation, and surface wear consistent with age and use, particularly around the seams and base. The front lens appears intact, and the side jewel is present. The base shows a perforated, cross-hatched pattern with a central hole for air flow. The clamp mechanisms appear functional. H 5.75″, W 3.5″, D 8″ (including mount).
