October Fall Classic
Lot 1086k:
Description
This is a great, authentic example of early transportation lighting! This is a vintage Radsonne carbide bicycle lamp from the early 20th century. These lamps were a significant advancement in bicycle lighting technology, using a chemical reaction between calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene gas, which was then ignited to create a bright, reliable flame. This lamp is constructed of a nickel-plated brass or steel body. The front reflector is hinged and opens, and there is a legible “Radsonne” mark on the top of the lamp. The piece has a great patina with overall tarnish, minor surface scratches, and some areas of pitting and rust, consistent with its age and use. Its working condition is unknown and it is being offered as-is. The lamp measures approximately 5 inches wide by 8 inches deep including bracket and 7.5 inches tall.
