Description

This is a great example of a late 19th C. acetylene bicycle lamp, specifically a “Solar” model manufactured by Plume & Atwood (P&A). The acetylene bicycle lamp, or “Gas Lamp,” was an essential accessory in the early 1900s. The back of the carbide tank is marked with the manufacturer’s name, “P&A SOLAR GAS,” amidst a beautiful stamped sunburst design. Further confirming its age and manufacturer, the bottom is clearly stamped “PAT’D MAR. 15.98,” “AUG. 2.98,” “DEC. 27.98,” and “MAY. 3.99,” indicating an early U.S. Patent date around the turn of the century. The construction is nickel-plated metal, likely brass or steel, and features a classic profile with a hinged front lens bezel, burner nozzle, and ventilation holes. A distinctive feature is the use of faceted jewel side reflectors, one dark green and one dark red/ruby, for side visibility. The original bicycle mounting bracket is also included. The lamp presents in good antique condition, showing heavy wear consistent with a working piece of history. The nickel plating is significantly worn and tarnished across the entire surface, exposing the base metal beneath. There is visible rust, pitting, and corrosion throughout. The lens is present but dirty and has internal marks. The base of the lamp is missing the carbide chamber cap/base, which is a necessary component for operation. The mounting bracket is detached from the main body but is included. H 8.75″, W 4″, D 4″.
