The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 2106:
Description
1) This exceptional archive documents the service of two WWI aviators, most notably Cpl. Benjamin F. Nave of the 185th Aero Squadron—the AEF’s pioneering "Night Bat" pursuit unit and the only night-fighter squadron in the American air service. The collection’s historical crown jewel is a poignant letter from Cpl. Nave to his parents, penned on the momentous date of November 11, 1918, directly reflecting on the signing of the Armistice and the profound relief and celebration as the war ended. This letter, alongside a rare 1918 Christmas Roster and correspondence on YMCA and Knights of Columbus "With the Colors" stationary, provides an unparalleled firsthand account of the war’s conclusion from the perspective of a specialized night-fighting unit. Also included are 33 pieces from 2nd Lt. Selwyn Clark Woodard, a ferry pilot whose early wartime letters predate his legendary career as a professional aviator. The documents are in good vintage condition, exhibiting expected age-related toning, original postal folds, and minor handling wear, all preserved within a modern three-ring binder that measures H 11.5", W 10.5", D 2".
2) Also included in this grouping is a panoramic photograph of the Motorized Elements of the First Division, at Fort Benning, GA in 1940. Rolled, it measures 10” tall and 38” wide. Crack and tear, and some paper loss on exterior exposed roll.
3) Official songbook for the 40th "Sunshine" Division titled "We’re Coming Back to California". H 13”, W 10”.
