Description
This poignant archive chronicles the World War I service of Private William J. Hart, U.S. Marine Corps, consisting of approximately 38 items housed in a modern photo binder. The collection features a variety of primary source materials, including a typed page detailing his 1917 enlistment, handwritten letters to his family on YMCA and “Le Foyer du Soldat” stationery, and stamped envelopes (all empty) tracing his path from Parris Island and Quantico to the AEF in France and later occupation duties in Germany with the 5th Regiment. Notable highlights include a hand-drawn target practice diagram and transcriptions to three letters, providing insight into his service during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. The condition is typical for century-old military ephemera; the documents exhibit natural paper toning, minor foxing, and original fold lines, though they remain legible within their protective binder pages.
