The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1092:
Description
An exceptional and highly personal grouping of WWII-era memorabilia of The legendary Brigadier General Robert L. Scott Jr., a Flying Tiger ace and the author of God Is My Co-Pilot. The lot includes two stunning ink-on-paper artworks of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, with its distinctive twin-boom design, adorned with the iconic shark mouth nose art. The presence of both a P-40 Warhawk image labeled “Old Exterminator” and the P-38 artwork is significant, as Scott flew both aircraft and is noted for transferring the shark’s mouth from the P-40, a staple of the Flying Tigers, onto a P-38 after joining the 23rd Fighter Group. Also included are a black and white photograph of Robert Scott, autographed for John Bannister, and a publication of the Museum of Aviation, Vol 4, No 1 Apring 1995 featuring the “Flying Tigers” and “Evolution of the Tiger Patch,” an “Eagles” bookmark, and a handwritten note on a blue/gray paper. The note’s content is personal and evocative, further connecting this lot to the human element of WWII aviation history. The materials, primarily paper and photo print, appear to be in excellent to very good condition, with crisp artwork and minimal noticeable fading or damage. This is an excellent, display-ready collection for a serious military aviation enthusiast. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11″, W 17″. See photos.
