Description

A stunning lot that features at least three original signed and numbered lithograph or limited-edition prints of detailed WWII fighter planes. The subjects are instantly recognizable and highly collectible: a Grumman F6F Hellcat, a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk (“Flying Tiger” style), and a North American P-51 Mustang. Tex Hill was a famous pilot, a Triple Ace credited with over 18 aerial victories, and a legendary member of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), known as the Flying Tigers, where he served as a flight leader and then squadron commander of the 2nd Squadron (Panda Bears), flying the P-40 Warhawk. After the AVG disbanded, he continued to fly, becoming the first American pilot to down a Japanese plane with a P-51 Mustang. This lot, which includes aircraft types directly associated with his celebrated career, along with a page of descriptive text and two handwritten notes (one of which appears to be a personal note), offers significant provenance for a collector. The prints are in excellent, unframed condition, showing no visible foxing, creases, or tears, with sharp, clear black-and-white lines. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11″, W 17″. See photos.
