Description
Civil War Grape Shot Cannonballs. Each are between 2.6” and 2.8″ diameter and weigh between 2.7 and 3.4 lbs. Likely part of a quilted grape projectile stand. Constructed with a base plate and an attached center post, quilted grape shot were stacked in layers around the post and a with a canvas bag stitched around to keep its shape. Most stands consisted of 3 layers with 5 or 6 shot per layer. Depending on the bore diameter, typical Civil War grape shot was as small as 2 inches and as large as 4.5 inches. Finishes vary on these from lightly pitted to fairly clean and smooth. From the David Hopper collection. Please see pictures
