Civil War Auction
Lot 1194:
Description
Federal spherical shell. Sectioned to show contents. Visible are pistol and musket balls, which Confederate artillery filled into captured Union shells, making it a case-shot projectile. Diameter 4.5” and currently weighs 8.22lbs. Would have been fired from a 12-pounder smoothbore, 4.62-inch caliber gun. Would have been mated with a wooden sabot cup, whose purpose was to align the fuze, and center it in the gun bore. This projectile was the most common Federal shell employing the Bormann time fuze. This is a great display piece for a Civil War or ordnance historian or collector. Please see pictures.
