Civil War Auction
Lot 53:
This is an excellent example of the 12 button M1858 cavalry shell jacket and is marked in right armpit with inked large “2” and “X” and there is a very blurry manufacturer’s oval ink stamp. All the buttons match and appear to have original stitching and are the plain thin neck eagle general service pattern. Both shoulder have dark grey cloth loops on shoulder for unknown purpose. The lining is a woven cotton cream colored material and sleeve lining is white cotton material. The condition is very good with the yellow worsted piping showing general fading to a more cream yellow color. The piping on the back of the collar has some wear loss of piping. The front chest area has 4 old small field repairs. The 12 button holes show much wear from use and show many field repairs. The blue wool body has no moth holes or tracks that we can see. There is very minor green verdigris stains to back of waist from belt displaying with it. There are some minor popped threads where shoulder meets sleeve. This is a classic unaltered shell jacket.
