This a wonderful Union officer’s cloak or cape attributed to Major Martin Pulver who was the commanding officer of all Colored Infantry Regiments. It has Massachusetts state 5 button front. All buttons match and are marked “D. EVANS CO. ATTLEBORO”. It is named “M. Pulver” in ink on a sewn cloth tag at back of neck. Neck is layered with very soft black velvet and has eyelet and hook closure front of neck. The wool body and wool lining are very finely made. The condition is very good plus and show some wear and age. There is some light moth holes and tacks with two areas on middle back and back middle cuff. Please see pictures. Also included is Pulver’s unmarked wartime small personal trunk which the cloak came in. It is 24″x14″x16″ and is fair condition with both leather carrying handles in place and missing some leather straps and loops. It is make of wood, leather and other materials with interesting interior leather pouch for papers and letters. Again, the truck is not named but collector reports this was Pulver’s trunk. Inside truck is modern printout of the Mass. 31th infantry with mention of 2nd Lt Martin Pulver. One can imagine this Massachusetts officer of means, spending his clothing allowance on high quality outerwear. This identified cloak is such a fine piece of Civil War history.
