Description

This kepi has a very fine dark blue wool body with no mothing or moth tracks at all. It has very light wear especially to back but doesn’t distract. The visor is flat with heat crazing to both sides and very tight to cap but one one corner for about one inch has separated. The thin neck eagle buttons have letter “A” in shield. The chinstrap has crazing yet is in very strong condition. The Third Corps diamond very soft velvet material with board stiffener underneath and shows wear and age but no mothing. The lining is lined with silk and has leather sweatband which show light wear and age. Silk has one tear 4″ from swaetband but it is hard to find unless you look carefully. Sweatband is near 100% sewn in place. The inside the tarred crown board is old (gold?) manufacturer stamp for G. W. SIMMONS & CO Boston. Part of the logo has heat-crazing damage which makes parts of the logo markings to read. This company name came into use in Feb. 1861 until the name change to G.W. Simmons & Sons in 1869. Collector records report this cap is from late 1863 early 1864 (Per Bazelon & McGuinn). This kepi is so pleasing and rings every bell for fine Civil War headgear.
