Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art – Bud Dixon, a Texas outlaw, who was part of the infamous John Wesley Hardin gang, Bud and his brother, Tom were Hardin’s cousins, they frequently rode with Hardin acting as lookouts and extra muscle during cattle drives and gambling disputes, in 1874, he was tracked down at a saloon when gunfight erupted, Hardin shot the Sheriff, but the brothers simultaneously shot him as fell to the ground, killing a beloved lawman triggered massive outrage, in 1874 a mob stormed the local jail and lynched the brothers and Joe Hardin, artist carved “VIT” in bottom, initials of a talented regional woodcarver that has deep roots in waterfowl decoy carving, the texture work on the clothing and boots strongly mimics the “feather texturing” techniques used by wildlife carvers to give wooden birds a realistic look before paint is applied, figurines have been in storage for 40 years, were going to be put on display at Donley’s Wild West Town, minor scuffs, good condition, 12″ x 6 1/2″
