Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art – Old Man Clanton, a cattle rancher, notorious outlaw and the patriarchal leader of the infamous Clanton Gang of Arizona, in 1881, Mexican Rurales tracked down the rustlers who ambushed a Mexican silver train, caught Clanton and his crew off-guard and killed him while he slept, died in late 1881, but 1882 appears to be a slight chronological error by the woodcarver, his violent death fueled the anger of his sons, directly escalating the bitter feud between the Clanton family and the Earp brothers that culminated in the Gunfight at the OK Corral, artist carved “VIT” in bottom, initials of a talented regional woodcarver that has deep roots in waterfowl decoy carving, the texture work on the clothing and boots strongly mimics the “feather texturing” techniques used by wildlife carvers to give wooden birds a realistic look before paint is applied, figurines have been in storage for 40 years, were going to be put on display at Donley’s Wild West Town, minor scuffs, good condition, 12″ x 6 1/2″
