The Frank Rider Collection - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 2
Lot 1162:
Description
This ensemble is truly significant piece of American entertainment history. This articulated, hand-cranked figure, styled as a musician, features a hand-carved wooden head, neck, hands, and shoes, reflecting the design aesthetics of early 20th-century carnival and amusement park attractions. The figure depicts a Negro musician in a vibrant, stylized fabric uniform with intricate golden embroidery. The mechanical function is particularly noteworthy; the included 39″ metal crank assembly with a 9″ arm attaches to the figure’s hands, allowing for articulated movement, while the mechanism includes a 12″ diameter wheel. The ensemble is remarkably complete, retaining its original purpose-built wooden shipping crate, which is stenciled “Harry’s Amusement Rides” and features internal hardware designed to secure the figure during transit. Condition is consistent with age; the hand-carved wooden components show authentic paint wear and surface craquelure, while the fabric clothing exhibits expected fading and minor wear. The metal crank assembly shows surface oxidation, and the crate bears structural scuffs and markings commensurate with its utilitarian history. H 64″, W 22.5″, D 17″. Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
