Description
This is a phenomenal piece of early Americana and Western wear—a full-length, heavy fur coat, often referred to historically as a “buffalo coat” or an overcoat made from a bison/buffalo hide. With its reddish-brown color, length, and coarse, dense texture, it strongly evokes the classic, rugged outerwear of the late 19th to early 20th century, ideal for extreme cold weather. The style features a very large, prominent collar, deep front panels, and a long, below-the-knee cut. The coat fastens with knitted cord toggle closures and has a thick, dark, likely quilted or padded lining, adding to its insulation. The overall appearance is quite dramatic and would have been a high-status, practical garment for a traveler or rancher. Condition is remarkably good for its age; the fur appears dense with no major bald spots visible, though there is typical wear and matting consistent with heavy use. The quilted lining shows some minor tearing or damage at the bottom edge and a few pale marks/stains, but the overall structure appears solid. The toggle closures are intact. It is a large garment.
