Description

This is a magnificent example of a hand-carved wood wall plaque by the renowned Western folk artist Dee Flagg (1922-1999), one of four up for auction, and carved in 1947. Flagg, one of Scottsdale’s most famous mid-20th-century artists, was celebrated for his intricate, hand-tooled western figures, a style he cultivated over a 70+ year career. The plaque features a classic Old West scene—a mounted cowboy with a rifle, set against a backdrop including a striking saguaro cactus. The carving exhibits excellent depth and detail, and still retains much of the original, subtle painted colorization on the figures and landscape. The condition is excellent for its age, showing minor surface wear, a few light scratches, and a beautiful, age-appropriate patina to the wood and painted areas, consistent with a well-preserved piece of Western folk art. The reverse side shows natural wood grain and evidence of the construction style, with a noticeable green/brown coloration from the wood finishing. The overall presentation is strong.
