Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1368a:
Description
These are a magnificent pair of vintage tooled leather saddlebags or alforjas, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, consistent with Western or Mexican tack. The dark brown leather, which shows years of rich use and patina, is expertly stamped with a scalloped, repeating border pattern and prominent swirling detail around the closure flap. The closure itself is a classic Rosette and Thong design, featuring a decorative, layered rosette over the flap with a leather tie threading through it to secure the bags, a common stylistic element on vaquero and cowboy gear. The bags are clearly made from heavy-duty, durable leather, and the overall construction suggests a piece made for daily utility on horseback. The condition is consistent with genuine age and use; the leather is dry, cracked in areas, particularly along the fold and base of the bags, and shows heavy rubbing and darkening (patina) on the interior, suggesting extensive use. The stitching appears mostly intact, but the leather straps and thongs are worn and likely fragile. There is a visible marking on the bottom right edge, which may contain a maker’s mark or serial number but is too obscured for positive identification. The metallic hardware is minimal, reinforcing the early, utilitarian nature of the piece. Associated with Lot # 1368 in this auction. H 9.5″, W 37.5″, D 4″.
