Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1515:
Description
Strong box or railway/stagecoach box. This piece is a quintessential example of late 19th to early 20th-century American security, crafted from thick, heavy cast iron. Its design is robust and utilitarian, but features a charming touch of Victorian-era flair in the decorative, raised scrollwork around the front handle/latch mechanism. The hinged lid suggests it was a deed or cash box, designed for transport and temporary secure storage before the era of modern safes, likely secured by a large padlock through the loop on the lid. It retains a beautiful, albeit dusty, black finish, suggesting an older paint or finish layer. The overall condition is good, consistent with age and use; the lid hinges are intact, though there is a considerable amount of grime and dust over the exterior. The interior shows surface wear and light corrosion but is structurally sound with no visible cracks or serious damage to the heavy iron body. H 7″, W 13″, D 9″
