Description

This is a fantastic example of a vintage carved wooden totem pole, likely dating from the mid-20th century and inspired by the Indigenous artwork of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The piece is carved from what appears to be a single, thick log, featuring stacked figures: an Eagle or bird figure at the top, a human-like figure or Shaman in the middle, and a lower, less defined figure, perhaps an animal. The style utilizes the characteristic bold colors—black, red, white, light blue/teal, and yellow—often seen in tourist or commemorative poles, though the specific clan or story is not discernible. While this style originates from the West Coast, the acquisition in Northern Wisconsin is not uncommon, as these poles were popular souvenir or decorative items sold across North America. It features separately attached wings, painted with a scalloped feather pattern, adding to its impressive width. The material is heavily weathered wood, likely fir or cedar, which has been hollowed out from rot over time, particularly visible at the base and top, suggesting a prolonged period of outdoor exposure. Condition is fair, with the paint is extensively chipped, faded, and flaking, especially the light blue. The wood is severely checked, cracked, and has suffered significant rot, resulting in a hollowed core. There are visible signs of pest damage and a small wooden dowel/pin near the top figure. The wings appear to be relatively recently reattached with modern screws. The condition of the piece is expected from its outdoor display history. The piece possesses nice character and would be perfect for your Northwest Coast display. H 69″, W 48″, D 16″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
