Description

This is a beautiful example of a circa late 19th to early 20th Century American stoneware crock, likely from one of the major pottery centers like Red Wing, Minnesota, or Ohio. The piece is a utility jar, traditionally used for bulk storage of sugar in the kitchen or pantry, as explicitly labeled on the front in a distinctive cobalt blue slip decoration that reads “SUGAR JAR.” It features a classic two-tone salt glaze, with the base being a grayish-tan and the upper portion receiving a cream-colored glaze with a pronounced craquelure (fine crackling) characteristic of the firing process. A notable detail is the original wire bail handle with a darkened, turned wooden grip, which indicates its intended function for lifting and carrying. The piece exhibits very good antique condition consistent with age and use; the salt glaze is largely intact, but the surface shows considerable craquelure and some overall staining/discoloration, particularly around the unglazed base. There are no obvious chips or cracks visible from the images. H 10.5″, W 9.5″, D 9.5″. See photos. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town
