Description

This is an excellent lot of three mid-to-late 19th-century patent medicine and business almanacs and advertising booklets, highly representative of the American proprietary remedies era. Included are: a 1877 Dr. Jaynes Medical Almanac and Guide to Health (published by Dr. D. Jayne & Son, Philadelphia), a 1874 Dr. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters Almanac (R. H. McDonald & Co., New York City), and a 1875 Hostetter’s United States Almanac (Hostetter & Smith, Pittsburgh). These paper ephemera pieces were a critical part of the marketing machine for popular remedies, promising health, temperance, and economy, and often utilized engaging graphics and detailed testimonials to sell the products. The general condition of the lot is Fair to Good for its age, with all showing significant signs of wear typical for 150-year-old paper. Visible imperfections include tears, creases, foxing, general discoloration, and minor material loss at the edges, though they are largely intact and legible. H 9″, W 6″, D 0.5″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
