Description
Pima coiled-construction olla basket circa 1920s. Features a traditional shape with a wide body and narrower slightly flared opening. The basket is made using a coiling technique at the center of the base, with devil’s claw and bold geometric square in square design throughout the piece. Olla baskets like this were historically used by the Akimel O’odham (Pima) people of Arizona for storage. Overall in fair to good shape, with the widest exterior waist, the rim and the base exhibiting loss of weaving. The base shows signs of traditional indigenous reinforcement or repair. Dimensions: 14.5” wide (waist) x 14.5” tall x 10.5” diameter opening. Base diameter 8”. Please see photos.
