October Fall Classic
Lot 1015:
Description
A fine example of early 20th-century American advertising, this lot includes a pair of one-gallon oyster cans. These cans were used to package and distribute fresh oysters, and their vibrant, lithographed designs were meant to catch a consumer’s eye. The “Daufuski Brand” can features a stylized profile of a Native American chief in full headdress. It was distributed by L. P. Maggioni & Company of Savannah, GA. The “Sailor Girl Brand” can depicts a pin-up style sailor woman with a rope, and was made in Chicago, IL. Both are constructed from tinplate. The cans show significant signs of age, including numerous scratches, scuffs, and areas of oxidation, particularly around the rims and bases. The “Daufuski” can has a noticeable dent near the top. Both cans are empty, and their original lids are present but loose. Their working condition is unknown and it is being offered as-is. They are approximately 7 inches tall with a 6-inch diameter.
