Description
This sword is the very sought after pre 1854 production M1840 saber with the recessed crossguard. The 31.5″ blade is marked on the ricasso is marked “N.P. AMES” over “CABOTVILLE” over “1848”. The other side is marked “U.S.” over “W.D”. The blade is bright and smooth to touch and has some dark patches of discoloration but the blade has no nicks or chips. The blade has no nicks or dings and tip is good. The blade edge has been sharpened very sharp the last half of blade. It was done very well without marring flat blade surfaces. The quillon is stamped “P” and advanced textbook opinions are that it was marked for use by the Pennsylvania State Militia. The handle and crossguard are tight and show much age and wear. The leather and wire wrapped handle is fairly tight and also show age and hard wear. The scabbard is in very good condition with no dings or dents and has a pleasant darkened patina. This rare sword variation has so many good attributes and displays very well.
