Description
This outstanding 1884 historic color chromolithograph, titled “The Battle of Gettysburg,” was produced by the prominent art publishers Kurz & Allison of Chicago, Illinois. Drawn by Louis Kurz, a Civil War veteran, this particular image served as the legendary first entry in the firm’s famous series of 36 Civil War battle scenes, directly inspired by Paul Philippoteaux’s 1883 Chicago cyclorama exhibition. The artwork is housed in its original, highly desirable period quarter-sawn “tiger” oak frame. An exceptional historical marker on the reverse backing board features an original round paper trade label for “Geo. Burmann Furniture & Funeral Director” from Genoa, Ohio, providing excellent regional Midwestern provenance. Objectively assessing its condition, there is random foxing on the paper here and there, along with minor toning appropriate for its age, but overall it presents very nicely; the vintage oak frame exhibits light surface scuffs and minor finish wear along the edges, and the backing board has typical age-related discoloration and dust. H 28.5″, W 34.5″, D 1.5″. Please see photos for condition.
