Lot 2518:
Description
This “Standard Grade” Bluebill (Greater Scaup) drake is a classic example of the late-production output from the renowned Mason Decoy Factory of Detroit, Michigan, dating to the final years of their operation (circa 1896–1924). Carved from solid cedar with the brand’s signature glass eyes, this specimen features the characteristic “Standard Grade” paint pattern with a black breast and tail, white sides, and a subtly dappled gray back. The authentic swirl of the breast paint and the surviving original surface is what collectors covet. The piece remains in good vintage condition with original paint showing expected light wear and thinning from field use, particularly on the back and tail. There is a notable longitudinal age crack running along the bottom through the lead weight, which is typical for solid-wood decoys of this era and does not detract from its shelf appeal. H 7″, W 5.5″, D 14.25″. Please see photos.
