Description

These late 19th to early 20th-century style Plains Indian moccasins showcase exceptional craftsmanship, featuring dense “lazy stitch” beadwork on brain-tanned hide. The vibrant geometric motifs, executed in seed beads of Cobalt blue, white-heart red, and greasy yellow, are characteristic of Lakota (Sioux) or Cheyenne artistry. The use of irregular, hand-cut seed beads—often referred to as “pony beads” or early “seed beads” depending on size—is a significant indicator of age, as these preceded the highly uniform, machine-cut beads of the modern era. The soles are constructed from thick, durable rawhide, and the ankle collars are finished with a striking red trade cloth. These are a beautiful example of indigenous footwear that transitions from functional wear to ceremonial art. Condition is good for their age, showing honest wear to the rawhide soles, some minor bead loss along the edges, and expected fading/fraying to the red textile trim; the hide remains supple with some light staining. H 2.75″, W 4.25″, D 10″.
