Description

Here is a classic piece of late19th century firearms, innovated by Smith & Wesson, the .32 Safety Hammerless “New Departure” revolver. This first model variation, nicknamed the “Lemon Squeezer” by collectors due to its distinctive integral grip safety on the backstrap, is a double-action, top-break revolver. This model was designed with a concealed hammer to prevent snagging and featured a grip safety, making it ideal for concealed carry. This specific revolver, manufactured around 1889, features a 3.5” round barrel and a 5-short cylinder. The barrel rib is stamped with the manufacturer and city of origin, “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A.” followed by a lengthy list of patent dates: “PAT’D FEBY. 20. 77. DEC. 18. 77. MAY 11. 80. SEPT. 11. 83. OCT. 2. 83. TWO. AUG. 4. 85.” It has a nickel plating finish and black checkered hard rubber grips with the S&W logo. The overall condition is good, showing considerable retention of the original nickel, though there is a uniform layer of wear, flaking, and light pitting across the frame and cylinder, typical of a service sidearm of this age. The checkered grips have a missing crack on the right side, but overall are in good condition with minor handling wear. The bore shows light freckling, and the rifling is in good condition. The trigger and action are tight and function properly. Please see photos for overall condition. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum. Overall length: 7.25” S/N: 2278 Classified Antique.
