Description

A classic piece of American Wild West, this Smith & Wesson Model 3, single action, top-break revolver (c1880) shows all the signs of being used by someone that made a living using a gun. Chambered in .44 Caliber, the 8” barrel has been cut back to 4.5”, making it easier to remove from the holster quickly. There is no front sight to hang up on anything when the gun is drawn, and shooting from the hip did not require a sight. The trigger release mechanism has been disconnected so that when the hammer was cocked, it released during a quick draw, requiring no trigger pull. This gave a person using the gun a split-second advantage over an opponent. The revolver itself has a 6-shot cylinder and displays the markings “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. PAT. APR. 3. 55 JULY 5. 59 NOV. 21. 65,” on top of the barrel. The serial number “5” is printed on the frame, and cylinder. The nickel plating shows a heavy patina, surface rust/pitting, and wear consistent with its age and implied frontier use. The grips appear to be original black hard rubber. The bore shows freckling, however the rifling is prominent. Please see photos for overall condition. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum. Overall length: 9.75” S/N: 5. Classified Antique
