Lot 2440:
Description
This is a classic piece of American military history: a U.S. Model 1904 McClellan Cavalry Saddle, featuring the distinct open-seat design intended to reduce weight and protect the horse’s spine. Constructed of heavy russet leather over a wooden tree, this specimen includes a brass “12 IN SEAT” shield on the pommel and an authentic U.S. marked curb bit. The M1904 was the standard issue for the U.S. Cavalry through the early 20th century and into WWI. The piece shows significant signs of age and service, with the leather exhibiting heavy crazing, surface wear, and a dry patina, while the brass hardware and iron bit show oxidation and verdigris. The rigging straps appear stiff and weathered, consistent with long-term storage or field use. H 42″, W 14″, D 20″ Please see photos.
