Relics of the American West: 1850-1920 - ONLINE ONLY
Lot 2433:
Description
This lot features an original pen-and-ink drawing by the prolific Western artist Asa Lynn “Ace” Powell (1912–1978). A protégé of the legendary Charles M. Russell, Powell’s work captures the grit and spirit of the American West with masterful linework, as seen here in this depiction of a frontiersman or scout on a rocky overlook. The piece bears Powell’s distinctive signature and his “Ace of Diamonds” mark, a hallmark he often used in lieu of a formal signature. The drawing is presented in a classic gold-toned ornate wood frame with a double-matting finish. Accompanying the artwork is a 1979 memorial catalog published by Thomas Printing, Inc. of Kalispell, Montana, which provides excellent provenance and biographical context for the artist’s career. Both the drawing and the accompanying catalog appear to be in very good vintage condition, with the drawing showing no signs of foxing or fading, and the frame exhibiting only minor shelf wear consistent with age.
