Lot 2432:
Description
This lot features a sophisticated pairing of two distinct styles of Native American portraiture: a collector-grade photogravure by Roland W. Reed and a classic mid-century oversized portrait of the Apache leader Geronimo. The highlight of the collection is “The Hunters – Ojibwa,” a period photogravure produced by Gravure Eng. Co., Mpls. Unlike many works from this era, this print has been meticulously preserved; it is held in place behind the matting with archival Mylar corners, ensuring no adhesive damage to the paper. The print surface is exceptionally clean with no tears or foxing. It is paired with a vintage 1970s-era Print Mint, Inc. reproduction of the 1887 Smithsonian photograph of Geronimo. While the Geronimo print shows characteristic mid-century wear, including water staining and light foxing along the lower margin, it provides a powerful visual anchor to the set. Reed Frame: H 17.5″, W 21.5″. Geronimo Frame: H 35″, W 23.5″. Please see photos.
