Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2251:
Description
This striking Plains-style war club features a bi-pointed, hand-ground stone head securely lashed to a wooden handle with a traditional hide wrap. The craftsmanship is highlighted by the intricate seed beadwork covering the majority of the shaft, utilizing a vibrant palette of yellow, red, green, and dark blue beads in geometric and banded patterns. A leather thong with brass-toned beads extends from the pommel for a wrist grip. This piece serves as a fine example of 20th-century Indigenous artistry, blending functional form with ceremonial decoration. The stone head shows natural surface variations and minor pitting consistent with the material, while the beadwork remains largely intact with only minor loose threads and light surface dust visible on the leather components. Overall length 20″, Head L 6″, Head D 3″. Please see photos for condition.
