Description

This is a phenomenal piece of American history—a little hickory chair that purportedly traveled overland by covered wagon from California to Kentucky/Arkansas with Gold Rush ’49er Sam Oldham. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1833, Oldham left for California’s gold fields at age 18, eventually returning East around 1854, carrying this chair. Its simple, rustic design—likely early- to mid-19th century—features turned hickory posts and stretchers, a distinctive curved back slat, and an intact, original woven bark or splint seat, all indicative of utilitarian, frontier-era furniture. The chair’s provenance is detailed by a small, historic label affixed to the top rail and accompanying informational documents. Accompanied is a framed photograph of Sam Oldham from the family, which is a later print copy used for display. The chair is in attic/barn find condition—it shows heavy, commensurate wear from its age and epic journey, including scuffs, chips, darkening of the wood finish, and significant patina to the woven seat, though the structure appears sound. The accompanying framed portrait, while a possible modern print, is in a good, ornate gilt frame. H 32″, W 19″, D 15″ (Chair) H 17.5″, W 13″, D 2″ (Framed Picture). Note: Pickup/Transport required.
