Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2200:
Description
Authentic Confederate States of America (CSA) brass saddle shield, a poignant relic of Civil War era cavalry equipment. Typically mounted to the pommel of a McClellan-style or related cavalry saddle, these shields often secured the coat straps through the rectangular slot seen in image.png. The shield features a classic keystone or “fan” shape with three mounting holes and the embossed serif “CS” letters centered prominently. Made of struck brass with a deep, untouched dark patina consistent with excavated or long-stored military artifacts. The condition is objectively fair to good for a relic of this age; it shows significant surface oxidation, verdigris, and pitting, particularly around the edges and mounting holes, but remains structurally sound with the lettering clearly legible. H 1.75″, W 1.75″, D 0.1″. Please see photos for condition.
