Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2067:
Description
This is a classic example of a hand-painted wooden Black Duck decoy, likely dating to the early to mid-20th century. The piece features a solid body with traditional scratch-painting techniques to mimic feathering and a contrasting green speculum on the wings. The head is detailed with inset glass eyes and a lead-weighted appearance common in functional hunting rigs. While the maker is unidentified, the form and paint style are reminiscent of Atlantic Flyway carvers. Condition Report: The decoy shows significant authentic field wear, including heavy paint loss and “shot marks” consistent with active use. There is a notable chip at the tip of the bill, and the head is currently loose from the body. H 6.5″, W 5.5″, D 15.25″. Please see photos
