Description

A superb four-volume collection of foundational cinema history texts tracing the evolution of moving pictures from their earliest conceptual days to the advent of sound. This curated lot features How Motion Pictures Are Made by Homer Croy (Arno Press, 1978 reprint of the 1918 classic); The Edison Motion Picture Myth by Gordon Hendricks (University of California Press, 1961), featuring its original vintage library card pocket and checkout stamps; Harry M. Geduld’s definitive work The Birth of the Talkies: From Edison to Jolson (Indiana University Press, 1975) with its striking illustrated dust jacket; and a highly desirable copy of Ray Phillips’ Edison’s Kinetoscope and Its Films: A History to 1896 (Flicks Books, 1997), which includes a personalized, signed inscription from the author dated 12/18/97 reading, “Dear Allen, Couldn’t have done it without your help. Many thanks! Ray Phillips.” This collection represents an incredible cross-section of academic and insider film history, showcasing cloth bindings, typographic jacket designs, and invaluable photographic plates. The books show light to moderate shelf wear consistent with age and research use, including minor tearing, chipping, and creasing along the edges of the Geduld dust jacket, light corner bumps, and standard ex-library markings (pocket, stamps, and spine label) restricted to the Hendricks volume; text blocks remain clean, tight, and completely legible. H 4.25″, W 9.75″, D 6.5″. Please see photos for condition.
