Lot 1048:
Description
This cylinder contains the historic “Laughing Song,” a seminal comic song performed by George W. Johnson, who was the first African American recording artist. The lot includes the original brown wax cylinder record, its corresponding decorative Edison Gold Moulded Record cardboard storage container featuring Thomas Edison’s likeness, and the original paper insert slip detailing catalogue number 4004. The cylinder is in stable condition with no visible breaks or cracks, showing expected heavy surface mold, fading, and wear appropriate for its age, though an accompanying note states it still plays acceptably; the cardboard tube and paper slip show typical aging, light creasing, and edge wear. H 4.5″, W 2.5″, D 2.5″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
