Description

This exceedingly rare, early audio artifact features an 1889 string core brown wax cylinder record alongside its unusual, custom-fitted rectangular cardboard storage box. Produced during the experimental dawn of commercial recorded sound, these string-reinforced cores are highly significant historical specimens typically associated with the pioneering production of the Edison Phonograph Works in Orange, New Jersey. The lot consists of the cylindrical wax core with its visible internal string reinforcement and the fabric-trimmed, protective rectangular cardboard box. The item is in poor, relic condition, showing heavy chipping, severe cracking, and material loss to the unplayable wax cylinder, while the box exhibits advanced structural wear, surface fading, and edge deterioration. Cylinder: H 4.5″, W 2.15″, D 2.15″; Box: H 4.5″, W 3.75″, D 3.75″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
